The Scale of the Universe 2

By far one of the coolest sites available to anyone with a nerdy bone for learning about the universe. The Scale of the Universe 2 site is like the Hitchhiker’s Guide for any possible living organism or thing in the universe, more or less pertaining to Earth; however, there are plenty of objects that are outside of the Earth.

Anyone interested in spending time learning small facts about the universe should check out this site. The further you scroll to the right the bigger things get and vice-versa to the left. Each object can be clicked on to learn the size and a fun fact.

The creators of this site Cary and Micheal Huang have done an amazing job as well as the musical composer Kevid McLeod. Personally, this site would be an excellent tool to use in school science classes. If you want to run the app, simply click on the button at the bottom to get it started. Definitely a great work that needs to be checked out!

Lake Vostok is a 20 Million Year Old Lake Buried Beneath Antarctica

For the past 20 years Russian scientists have been drilling over two and a half miles under the Earth to reach Lake Vostok, a lake that has been hidden for over 20 million years in the middle of Antarctica – the coldest place in the world. The video above is a small clip from a documentary regarding Lake Vostok.

Vostok is believed to have more fresh water than any other lake in the world, by volume, Vostok is the largest lake known to man. To give you an idea of how deep Vostok is, the lake is kept warm by heat coming from the Earth’s core, even though two and a half miles of ice are resting above it. The Russians are stationed in the Vostok Station, which is considered to be one of the coldest places on earth.

For nearly two decades the Scientist have been conducting experiments as they drill down to the lake, they are collecting ice core samples, and microorganism samples that they find trapped in the cores. Now that they are about to break through the layer, they are jumping in excitement to see what they are going to find.

The Lake has been completely undisturbed for over 20 million years, since back when Antarctica was attached to Australia, IF there is life, this is going to be one of the greatest finds of our modern history.

So what will they find when they break through the ice cap? I can tell you what they won’t find, the Spark Cube from Transformers! But on a more serious note, if they don’t find life, their last 20 years of drilling would become the largest disappointment of the scientists’ life. These people spent nearly two decades freezing to death to see what this lake has hidden on its waters.

There are other problems to take into consideration, if there is life; the drill bit could potentially contaminate the water killing all the organisms that are trapped in the lake. Other more serious problems are pressure buildups from the past 20 million years that could destroy the entire drill assembly, picture opening a coke can under pressure. Lastly, whatever is living down there has never been in contact with Humans, but most importantly, WE have never been in contact with whatever lives there. This could release ancient bacteria that we’re not prepared to deal with.

If it all goes well, we would, not only learn about the history of our early Earth, but we could learn about the possibility of having life on ice planets and moons like Europa.[ Via: BBC ]

Surprise Asteroid Passing Really Close to Earth – Right Now!

In case you didn’t know, on Wednesday, astronomers detected an asteroid that was heading towards the Earth. After doing whatever astronomer math they do, they determined that we’re going to be okay because the asteroid is only 5 times closer to the Earth than the Moon. That’s right, this asteroid is going on the list of  “one of the closest approaches ever recorded.”

At least that’s what Gareth Williams—associate director of the Minor Planet Center, which operates at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory—said while talking to BBC News. The asteroid caught astronomers by surprise. In a recent tweet, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Near Earth Object Office (NEOO) said that “asteroids this small are hard to spot, and luckily they pose the least concern.” Their goal is “to find the bigger ones.”

NEOO made the announcement in another tweet yesterday:

Busy week. Asteroid 2012 BX34 will safely pass Earth on Jan. 27. Distance: 36,750 miles (59,044 km) or about .17 lunar distance.

Later, they followed with:

Asteroid 2012 BX34 is small, ~11 meters/37 ft diameter. It wouldn’t get through our atmosphere intact even if it dared to try.

The asteroid is traveling at about 5.53 miles per second (8.9 kilometers per second) and will pass Earth Right About now…! [NEOO Twitter, BBC News, Gizmodo]

100 Historic Events in 10 Minutes [Video]

2011 has come and gone, we’re quickly moving into the 21st century and things are rapidly changing. In the past 25 years of my life very important things have happened. In my own life, I have seen the destruction of the Twin Towers, wars, and the birth of a new social culture.

The last 100 years have changed the world as we know it, and the video uploaded to youtube by derDon1234  features the most historic events from each year for a hundred years. The video is both inspiring and moving, so for the next 10 minutes, sit back, relax, and see how much has changed in the last century. Hopefully later on he will produce a video displaying the events of 2011. This past year alone has had an extremely huge impact in our society, and the world. Via: Bit Rebels

The Top Ten Places You are Not Allowed to Visit

There are places on Earth that civilians are not allowed to visit, most are military bases and installations, but some are hidden in plain sight, like the VIP center in Disney Land that has a decade long waiting list.

We already know the reasons as to why we can’t visit Area 51 or other military bases- they hold secrets that we’re not supposed to know about; like the not so super secret alien spaceship, or the next military plane.  I’m just curious as to what’s inside the Disney Land resort O_o what could be so secret that they don’t want us to visit?  The video listed above goes over every one of the places and shows you a satellite view of the location. Here is the list of these secret locations.

10 )  The RAF Menwith Hill in the Ukraine – This base is the worlds largest electronic monitoring site. If a missile is about to launch, or launches anywhere in the world, these is the sight that’s going to detect the launch well before anyone else.

9 ) Club 33 Disneyland in California – An exclusive members only club for VIPs located in the center of Disneyland. The waiting list to access the club has a decades long waiting period.

8 ) Bohemian Grove in California – An innocent looking campsite that only the most powerful people in the world can enter.

7 ) The Vatican Secret Archive in Vatican City – Most of the texts can be ordered up, but the “secret” archive means that the Pope has his own personal set of Texts. While you can order anything you want, no one is allowed to go inside – at least not unless you have connections.

6 ) Laxcaux Caves in France – They are covered in Paleolithic cave art, only a very select few number of scientists can enter the caves.

5 ) Pine Gap in Australia – The only area in Australia that is marked as Prohibited and actually enforces the entrance to any citizen on land or air. Not even planes flying over the area can enter unless they are flying over 18,000 feet above the base.

4 ) Metro 2 in Moscow Russia – This is the secret underground metro system in Russia, built by staling for the Russian secret service.

3 ) Room 39 in  Pyongyang in North Korea – This is allegedly a government controlled front for drug dealing and smuggling.

2 ) Mezghorye in Rusisia – Rumored to be the location of Russia’s dead hand nuclear missile site. At any given time, there are two battalions stationed in the base to keep praying eyes away.

Ofcourse, this list would not be complete without the American Super Secret military installation.

1 ) Area 51 in Nevada USA – This location is so secret that there are hundreds of conspiracies around the military installation.

Many of these places may not hold anything in them, but just because citizens are not allowed to enter the locations makes them the topic of discussion for many conspiracy theorists. Area 51 probably has nothing more than experimental air planes, but when there is doubt, people assume different things:

Observation – No citizen is allowed inside Area 51
Conclusion – They are holding Alien space crafts.

You see ho that makes sense?

Arctic Sea Ice Continues Decline We Just Hit the 2nd-Lowest Level

Well, it looks like our earth is not doing to great again, according to Nasa, our arctic ice levels have reached the second lowest point ever. The Ice cap grows each winter as the sun sets for several months, and then the ice melts in the summer time when the sun comes back up. But this year, the ice melted to fast, and it almost reached the record low that was set back in 2007. You see the yellow lines? that’s where the Ice Should be at right now.

Joey Comiso, senior scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said the continued low minimum sea ice levels fits into the large-scale decline pattern that scientists have watched unfold over the past three decades.

The sea ice is not only declining, the pace of the decline is becoming more drastic,” Comiso said. “The older, thicker ice is declining faster than the rest, making for a more vulnerable perennial ice cover.

This is pretty bad news for everyone that likes to keep up with the climate, at this rate, we’ll have no ice in the poles in the upcoming decades. But right now, I’m in the middle of a desert and it’s 52 degrees out here… so it’s going to get cold again don’t stress about this to much. Yet…

Has Our Space Exploration Drive Died?

For decades, humans have had a drive to fly, and even more, fly out to outer space. During the ’60s and ’70s, we expanded our flying technology in ways that were unimaginable at the time. In less than 10 years, we were able to land a man on the moon. I would have thought that by now, we would have been on Mars, or at the least, have a base on the moon.

But instead of having a continuous expansion to land a man on Mars, we slowed down. Our efforts dwindled and they slowly began to die out. More than 40 years have gone by, and we still have difficulty landing humans on the moon. Perhaps we got scared of what was out there, or maybe we finally reached a limit to our scientific advancements of the time, or it could be that even though we sent about a dozen humans to space, we never really gained any money from the exploration. While we did learn hundreds of thousands of new things about outer space, we really didn’t bring anything home that had any real monetary value.

For decades now, we’ve been stranded here on our planet not knowing what is going to happen next. Sure, we send out rovers to Mars, or we send out probes to other planets and moons, but never an actual human being. It wasn’t until our private business owners decided that it was time to keep the drive of exploration going that we decided it was time for us to pick up the pace once more. But how much of our technology and knowledge did we sacrifice by not doing anything for years? I’m sure you will argue against that and say “well, we actually did something, we came up with theories” and you’re right. We really did come up with hundreds of theories about what was going on in our universe. We came up with theories about light, black holes, white holes, and the list goes on and on. We have hundreds of different theories that have found life on other planets – on paper – but not in real, known, 100%-solid facts.

Some may argue that the reason we had such an amazing expansion in the beginning was because we had a space race with Russia and now that we won the race, there is no reason to keep on going. If that is the case, then who are going to race against next? If those people are correct, then that might explain why private companies are wanting to get to Mars. Those companies have created a new space race among themselves. But what’s going to happen when that race is also finished?

Have we become the type of humans that while we are dying to know what is out there and how it works, instead of actually taking to the skies and space to learn how it’s done, we’d rather sit and try to make sense of it on paper? Sure, we’ll know exactly how the universe works, but then when we go out to the cosmos we realize our formula was off, or our math was incorrect. I understand we need planning, we need to know “if this, then that”, but we need to have some sort of hands-on experimentation going on at the same time to rule out accidents and fix the problems as they come up.

We need to be out there, doing something. Now that the US shuttle program is finished, what is going to happen to all the children or the dreamers who want to become an astronaut to visit other planets? Who is going to become the next Neil Armstrong of Mars, and beyond? We need to find a way to encourage young children to learn more about the cosmos and what is going on.

Just because we’ve reached the end of an era doesn’t mean that the astronaut dream needs to die out as well.

An Asteroid Came Very, VERY Close to the Earth Earlier Today

Were you looking at the sky earlier this afternoon? If you were, did you see anything special in the sky? well… there was an asteroid that came REALLY REALLY Close to hitting the Earth,  how close am I talking about? Close enough that it came between the Earth and our Satellite’s orbit.

The image above is a picture of the asteroid as it swooshed by, pretty cool uh?

Luckily for us, scientist tracked the asteroid for a long while and knew the rock wasn’t going to hit the Earth. Everyone kept their cool, primarily because even if the asteroid would of come in closer to the earth, it probably would of burned up anyways. But come on, how about a warning next time?

Additionally, I feel like scientist could use this asteroid to practice techniques on altering the path of the asteroids, or sending out a nuclear bomb to see if we can even move it a bit… you know just in case we ever really need to do this on the real deal. I know, I know, it’s something we can’t achieve just yet, but we need to start somewhere. Like our bodies using germs to practice and get better antibodies, one of these day’s were going to be staring at a rock the size of Manhattan rushing towards our planet, and we’ll have nothing to stop it but a couple of oil miners and Bruce Willis to throw at it.
