A “Failed” Future Prediction According To 1956

Every year or so, someone comes up with a set of predictions that are supposed to inspire us, and give us some sort of goals for the future. Like the whole Flying car, we all know what happened with that. But at the time, it inspired the engineers to be the first ones to create this flying contraption. It created some sort of “race” to see which startup company would be offering the first vehicle by the year 2000.

Pushing flying cars to the side, other people give out predictions about the economy, wars, peace times, and accidents that are going to happen. The Image to the left reads:

The Year is 1990, The World Is At Peace War And Crime Have Been Eliminated.

Sadly, the image was supposed to symbolise a time of peace and serenity… and we haven’t seen either one of those times. I guess we can always change the year: The Year is XXXX The World Is At Peace War And Crime Have Been Eliminated : and just keep on changing the year until We no longer exist. As long as Humans are alive, War and Crime are always going to be a problem…farmthis, a Reddit User, couldn’t of have said it any better: The year is 2012. War is an essential economic driver and never-ending. Prisons are privatised and for-profit. “crimes” are handed out like candy at a parade.

Giles Corey Was a Real Badass in History

You probably have no idea as to who this guy is, but in the 1690’s this old man died in a  form of torture where they would place stones above your body until you were “pressed” to death. Giles was a farmer, but in 1692 Ann Putnam, Jr., Mercy Lewis, and Abigail Williams, accused him of witchcraft.

Ann Putnam claimed that on April 13, the specter of Giles visited her and asked her to write in the Devil’s book. She also claimed that a ghost appeared to her and told her that Corey had murdered him. Really, this was all a scam, the girls would call witchcraft on a farmer, the state would then come in and try to kill the farmer UNLESS they turned over the rights of the land to another person – in this case Giles neighbour.

The court was going to take Giles to trial, find him guilty of witchcraft, kill him, then take his land and give it to the neighbour. At the time, the only way to do this is if a person declares themselves Guilty or Innocent. Since Giles never declared either one of them, on September 17, Sheriff George Corwin led Corey to a pit in the open field beside the jail and in accordance with the law, before the Court and witnesses, stripped Giles of his clothing, laid him on the ground in the pit, and placed boards on his chest. Six men then lifted heavy stones, placing them one by one, on his stomach and chest. Giles Corey did not cry out, let alone make a plea.

After two days, Giles was asked three times to plead innocent or guilty to witchcraft. Each time he replied, “More weight.” More and more rocks were piled on him, and the Sheriff from time to time would stand on the boulders staring down at Corey’s bulging eyes. Robert Calef, who was a witness along with other townsfolk, later said, “In the pressing, Giles Corey’s tongue was pressed out of his mouth; the Sheriff, with his cane, forced it in again.”

Three mouthfuls of bread and water were fed to the old man during his many hours of pain. Finally, Giles Corey cried out “More weight!” and died. Supposedly, just before his death, he cursed Sheriff Corwin and the entire town of Salem. Since Corey refused to plead, he died in full possession of his estate, which would otherwise have been forfeited to the government. It passed on to his two sons-in-law, in accordance to his will.” and THAT’S why Giles Corey was a total Bad Ass in history. Via: Wikipedia

Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar – A Real Life Caterpie Pokemon!

Who knew Pokemon were real?! This may not be anything to awesome, but the Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar is strikingly similar to Caterpie from the Pokemon series. The caterpillar even has horns at the top of his head that come out when it is trying to intimidate attackers, or it feels threatened.

The image to the left is Caterpie, in case you were born in that one sad decade when Pokemon had lost their “cool.”  The real life Caterpillar is pretty tiny, no wonder Charizard always kicked it’s ass in battle. The Video above shows you how it looks in real life – and all this time I thought Pokemon were unique…

Epic Battle Where 30 Hornets Take On 30,000 Bees

The movie Killer Bees was a hell of a movie, they turn an aggressive type of bee into a deadly monster that killed anything that came into their path. But if you’re a killer bee, your worst enemy is not another colony of bees, it’s an even more fearsome monster. The Japanese Giant Hornet comes directly from Japan, and is probably deadlier than Godzilla him herself. Watch as this nest of 30,000 bees make their last stand against 30 of the feared hornets.

The Honeybees made their stand but failed to push away their attackers, the hornets practically attacked the bees in mid flight by piercing their abdomens with a superior hornet stinger. The hornets may have taken out the weaker, more docile Honeybees that we all learned to love for their honey, had this been a nest of Japanese Honeybees, the results would have been much different.

Unlike the European Honeybees, the Japanese bees have a special type of defense. This is honestly the only “B” the Japanese would be proud of. They “fry” the hornets to death, literally. The video below is what would have happened if the hornets confused a bee’s nest with a Japanese Bee’s Nest. After watching these two videos, I learned one thing – don’t mess with Japanese anything. via Blame the Voices

This Boy Can See In The Dark: He Literally Has Cat Eyes

The video above is of Nong Youghui, a boy that has stunned medics with his ability to see in pitch the dark with eyes that glow in the dark. When light hits his eyes, the lights show the reflection of the light, similar to what happens when you flash a light to a cat in the dark.

Doctors have studied Nong Youhui’s amazing eyesight since his dad took him to hospital in Dahua, southern China, he was deeply concerned over his bright blue eyes.

Dad Ling said: “They told me he would grow out of it and that his eyes would stop glowing and turn black like most Chinese people but they never did.”  Medical tests conducted in complete darkness show Youhui can read perfectly without any light and sees as clearly as most people do during the day.

Experts believe he was born with a rare condition called leukodermia which has left his eyes with less protective pigment and more sensitive to light. The precise cause of leukodermia is very complex and not fully understood. It is known that as a result of this auto-immune disorder, eyes are more sensitive to light and without as much protective pigment as would be found in normal eyes.

The actual video became popular in 2009, but just recently people started to find the video in different sites and, nothing ever came out of this child’s special ability but it’s still cool none of the less.

These Two Aircraft Carriers Are Very Bad News

Gizmodo recently had a story regarding the Two supercarriers in the picture bellow. They are right, the two carriers side by side are freaking awesome to watch and picture, but when you see to carriers side by side it usually means bad news.

Gizmodo reported that the two carriers are the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS John C. Stennis, two of the ten nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft supercarriers in service with the United States Navy. The Lincoln just arrived to the Strait of Hormuz as tension keeps mounting up in the area.

The Strait of Hormuz is an extremely important geographic point. Forty percent of the world’s oil passes through this strait on its way out of the Persian Gulf. Whoever controls this pass, would be able to inflict great damage to the world’s economy.

According to the Washington Post, an Iranian lawmaker is now proposing to close the strait in retaliation against the oil embargo recently approved by the European Union, which has followed the United States in their sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program.

But here is something they didn’t cover, If you remember last month, Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, commander of the Iranian navy, claimed that closing the Strait would be “easy,” adding: “As Iranians say, it will be easier than drinking a glass of water.”

But USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered carrier capable of embarking 90 aircraft, passed through this channel and entered the Gulf without incident on Sunday. HMS Argyll, a Type 23 frigate from the Royal Navy, was one of the escort vessels making up the carrier battle-group. A guided missile cruiser and two destroyers from the US Navy completed the flotilla, along with one warship from the French navy.

I guess the Iranian government wasn’t expecting them to try to pull anything off, or maybe they didn’t take into consideration that Each of these Nimitz class vessels carries a complement of fighter aircraft with more striking power than the entire Iranian air force. Didn’t see that one coming did ya admiral?

This Man Did NOT Know He Shot Himself in the Head With a Nail Gun

When you shoot your self in the head, the first thing you should feel is the pain associated with the shot right? At least that’s how it should be, but Dante Autullo shot him self in the head with a nail gun and didn’t even feel a thing… well he felt the hit but didn’t think it was anything to serious. As a matter of fact, he kept on going throughout the day as if nothing had happened. He drove 8 hours back home and took his child to a school recital, all while he had a freaking 3 1/2 inch nail in the middle of his brain.

He claims that he felt the hit, but when he went to reach for it he just felt a small scrape and had no idea the gun had actually fired the nail into his skull. That actually makes some sort of sense. If you get hit, you usually feel around, if there isn’t a big hole you tend to ignore things. Last year This Man got shot in the head with a bullet and didn’t know about it until 5 years later. He thought he had gotten hit by a firework during a New Years celebration in Germany.

The reason he didn’t feel anything inside is head is actually pretty simple to explain – your brain doesn’t feel pain… shocking I know, but the brain – the giant piece of mass that sends out signals when something hurts – doesn’t have the ability to send out signals that HE is hurting.

The fact that he shoved a 3 1/2 inch nail into his head however, that’s a little more complicated to explain.

Here’s what happened, according to The Chicago Tribune:

Autullo was standing on a ladder, reaching over his head to drive nails into the top of a wall, when he lost his grip on his nail gun. The recoil swung the gun back and pressed it against his skull. From the outside, it appeared to be a minor scrape, but just below the skin was the head of a nail.

The nail had entered cleanly into his brain without sending skull and bone fragments into the gray matter. The nail didn’t touch any vital areas of the brain. Which kept him alive, he didn’t lose any type of body sensitivity, movement, or even suffer from migraines. The Doctors are not exactly sure how he was able to deal with the nail in his head yet. After he came home from the kids rehearsal, he took a nap and THEN he went to the doctor, where they took the X-Ray in the image below.   [Chicago Tribune via: Gizmodo]

Giant Lego Sorting Plant Made Out Of Legos

The Lego Sorting Machine in the video above was made by the the folks at BrickIt, this is a small but impressive, Lego sorting factory to demonstrate the firm’s manufacturing execution system. And they are damn good at executing that system. They used over 37,000 pieces of Lego, 28 different types of motors, 22 different, color and ultrasonic sensors, and 7 Mindstorm NXT controllers.

They then added a couple of conveyor belts to add to the effect and when they finally got it started, all systems work together to effectively sort 2×4 and 1×2 bricks by size and color. When the box of assorted Legos gets full, a robot will automatically remove it, replacing it with an empty container so the plant can continue working away.  And all this time I thought you couldn’t use Legos to do anything to creative… [via The NXT Step]
